Gout is a type of inflammatory arthritis that causes uric acid in the body to crystallize in and around the joints. It is also a chronic disease, meaning it is to be managed lifelong.  Gout occurs in individuals who often have high levels of uric acid in their bodies. At the same time, there is also a misconception that having urates in the body leads to gout.

Ways to prevent gout:

Food:

  • Reduce intake of protein supplements, non-veg as it increases the levels of purine in the body leading to a build-up of uric acid in blood resulting in gout.
  • Avoid taking foods that high in salt and preservatives.
  • Avoid carbonated drinks that are high on sugar as well as dairy products.
  • It is better to have a regular intake of foods that are easily digestible.
  • Fried foods, alcohol and tobacco, along with red meat should be avoided.
  • Keep your body well hydrated

Stress:

Sometimes, stress is also a triggering factor of a gout attack. While it is not possible to eliminate all the stress, it is possible to minimize them like practicing meditation and breathing techniques.

Exercise:

As obesity is one of the leading factors that trigger a gout attack, it is paramount to keep one’s weight in check. It is advisable to do at least 30 minutes of exercise. Yogasanas like Surya Namaskar, Sukhasana, Vrikshasana, and so on can help in managing gout.

Physical exercises help in improving the body’s flexibility, blood circulation, and it also helps in the detoxification of the body. At the same time, it is vital to get a proper amount of rest and sleep.

Treatment:

A combination of treatments using medicated oils along with regulated intake of medicines and food based on the individual’s Prakriti are prescribed. However, before undertaking any ayurvedic treatments for gout, doctor consultation is a must.
